Mario - The Rest of the Story

January 27th, 2010

This is Mario’s story as told by Milenko Miljatovic, a volunteer for Mission Without Borders -

This is what Milenko said:marios-pic.gif

“Everything started when I began working as a volunteer for Mission Without Borders. I went to the refugee camp in Tasovcici a couple of times and noticed a girl there called Martina Bakovic. She was willing to read Christian books and to listen when we talked about God and His Kingdom. I tried my best to help her see the Truth. A week before the youth summer camp, I invited her to be a part of it. She spent a few days thinking about it and at last asked me if her boyfriend could come with her. I understood the problem straight away. Even so, I wanted to meet him and explain the rules of our Christian camps. He was in his barracks along with his mother and some of their neighbors. I witnessed to them about how God had set me free from drugs during one of the Christian camps I had attended and about how grateful I am that there is a reason to live. As I was leaving, Mario grabbed my hand and whispered to me, “Please take me to that place!”

The day of the camp came. Mario and Martina were with us. As we approached the lake, they took me aside and explained that they were drugs addicts and had decided to try to come off drugs at the camp.

The leaders of the camp wanted to send them home for the sake of the rest of the young campers. That afternoon, I prayed. I really wanted them to stay at the camp and to help them. The evening program began before the final decision to send them and after a short sermon, the preacher asked anyone wanting prayer to go forward. Mario was first up and went forward. He really desired to receive the things I had spoken to him about. Because of this, the leadership decided to let the two of them remain with us.

The first few days were hard for them. Mario was polite. He apologized to me every time he made a move. I knew that he was suffering tremendous pain. Martina gave up and left after three days and Mario wanted to go after her and help her. We knew that if he left, the chances that he would ‘survive’ in his usual environment were slim. We somehow managed to stop him and got him to come back and finish the camp. He was devastated, but still firm in his decision to obey God.

The day of departure came and we wanted to convince Mario that he needed help and encourage him to go to a commune to let God strengthen him and prepare him for a life without drugs. However, his only wish was to help Martina, so he left and went back to the refugee camp. As we expected, he failed in his efforts to help Martina, as well as in his own abstinence. In spite of this, I tried to pay them both a visit whenever I went to Tasovcici camp. On one occasion, I was walking with Mario and we met my friend Dado, in a car, at a crossroads. We had met him at the summer camp and we knew he was a leader at the commune in Breza. It was a miraculous meeting and we spent time talking together about Mario’s wish for recovery. That was the moment when Mario made the decision to go to the commune. I stayed in contact with Mario and Dado and kept up with Mario’s progress. Every single report about him was positive. Mario was obedient and so committed to God. He was eager for any kind of spiritual activity. He is a great encouragement to me and I’m so thankful to God that he is where he is.”

When asked to share his testimony Mario said:

“Before I met Jesus, my life was miserable. Our father left us and didn’t want to know about me and my brother. Due to the war, we left our town and our home. Since then, I have not known where to call home or even who I am. I wanted to escape those kinds of feelings and started to use different kinds of drugs and went on to heroin after a while. Instead of my life becoming more bearable, it became much worse as I got into more and more difficulties due to the drugs. When I realized what God had done for me, it was the best thing that happened to me. I began a new life. At the summer camp, I went to the prayer tent and just poured out my heart to God, I gave Him everything I had and He gave me the new life that I have in Jesus Christ. Today, I haven’t got enough words to express my thankfulness to Him.” Mario began to cry: “I can’t talk about it without crying, because God gave me the opportunity to start over. I stopped using drugs, I looked for my father and when I found him I asked him to forgive me for my hatred towards him. Now I see that my biggest problem wasn’t drugs, but life without Christ and that most of my neighbors are experiencing the same problem.”
