This winter in Ukraine, the country is stagnant. The cost of living and the continual political upheaval is putting strain on every area of life. Hope was already being squeezed before the crisis in 2014, now as temperatures plummet, so too are the opportunities for young people who hope to get an education beyond high school.

In the small town of Sarny in Western Ukraine, Mission Without Borders has been running a vocational and education training center for the past 13 years. Its biggest selling point is the fact that here, as a result of support from donors across the world, education is free. Each year students from the town and from isolated villages, sometimes as far as 60 miles away, have the chance to come to live and learn at the center to obtain its biggest material gift - opportunity.

Over 2,000 students have received state-approved diplomas since the center's launch in 2003. The courses offered include: tailoring, catering and IT.

"My dream is to become a web designer," says David, one of the IT students at the center. "I am one of seven children in my family, we have very little, and there is no way my parents would be able to pay for my education if it was not for this center. None of my other siblings have had an opportunity like this, so I am determined to make the most of it."

"We know there are many gifted young people in this part of Ukraine, but the current education system makes it very difficult for them to progress. If they could they would be able to contribute so much more to their families, their communities and the country as a whole." say's Viktor, the center's IT teacher.

Mykola, Mission Without Borders Ukraine manager, said: "This center is unique to this region in how it seeks to make a difference to disadvantaged young people, by giving them skills which they can use for the rest of their lives."

The Sarny Training Center is also not just about education.

CS Lewis said : "Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil." Indeed, here, we seek also help young people to learn, know and live out the values of Jesus Christ as they develop into adulthood.
